Dear Mr Winer as a man of good taste,  this is a tasty look at a great Wordsmith I am going to be politically incorrect  print it out and put it next to my dradle under the chanukah  bush ! At 72 yeara old I still say merry christmas happy chanukah -Feliz Navidad Feliz Ano Nuevo . I think my clear conscience came from my high school read's and a good Shrink!  This choice of Mr Rosen brings back great reads,John Dos Passos,Pablo Neruda,Freeman Dyson,  Charles Dickens, Gustave Flaubert, Rudyard Kipling, Herman Melville, Ivan Turgenev, Leo Tolstoy, and Emile Zola, by the time I graduated high school thanks to people like Mr Rosen I had read a lot of the Great Books !

I guess Christmas Eve is the day to announce the Blogger of the Year. It's only the second time I've done it, and I did it last year on this day, and it seems like a good day to do it. That's what being a real blogger is like. It's like just feeling like doing something and then doing it.

I hope that makes sense. Dave Winer Scripting News

Anyway…

In my teaser I said that this year's BOTY is a smoker, but when I told him he was the guy, he said he stopped smoking four years ago. That's very good. More blogging for the rest of us.

So who is it?

Well, it's Jay Rosen.
A picture named rosen.jpgJay is one of those guys who has spent 20 or 30 years really studying something, really understanding it. He developed a theory about his subject of study, but instead of stopping there, Jay is always learning, asking questions, considering whether his understanding of the world actually reflects what's happening. And he does all this out in the open, on a blog, and most recently, very deliberately and systematically, on Twitter.  dave winer  Archive > 2008 > December > 24
Jay Rosen has been on the faculty since 1986, and from 1999 to 2005 he served as chair of the Department. He lives in New York City.

Rosen is the author of PressThink, a weblog about journalism and its ordeals (www.pressthink.org), which he introduced in September 2003. In June 2005, PressThink won the Reporters Without Borders 2005 Freedom Blog award for outstanding defense of free expression. In April 2007 PressThink recorded its two millionth visit.

He also blogs at the Huffington Post. In July 2006 he announced the debut NewAssignment.Net, his experimental site for pro-am, open source reporting projects. The first one was called Assignment Zero, a collaboration with Wired.com. A second project is OfftheBus.Net with the Huffington Post.

Rosen is also a member of the Wikipedia Advisory Board.

In 1999, Yale University Press published his book, What Are Journalists For?, which is about the rise of the civic journalism movement. (sample chapter) Rosen wrote and spoke frequently about civic journalism (also called public journalism) over a ten-year period, 1989-99. From 1993 to 1997 he was the director of the Project on Public Life and the Press, funded by the Knight Foundation.

As a press critic and reviewer, he has published in The Nation, Columbia Journalism Review, the Chronicle of Higher Education, The New York Times, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, Newsday and others. Online he has written for Salon.com, TomPaine.com and Poynter.org. In 1990 he and Neil Postman (friend, colleague, mentor) hosted a radio show on WBAI in New York called “The Zeitgeist Hour.”

In 1994 he was a fellow at the Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard University, and in 1990-91 he held a fellowship at the Gannett Center for Media Studies at Columbia University.

A native of Buffalo, NY, Rosen had a very brief career in journalism at the Buffalo Courier-Express before beginning graduate study. He has a Ph.D. from NYU in media studies (1986).

"Those in journalism who want to bring ethics to blogging ought to start with why people trust (some) bloggers, not with an ethics template made for a prior platform operating as a closed system in a one-to-many world."
In January of 2005 I wrote Bloggers vs. Journalists is Over, by which I meant “this debate isn’t going anywhere.” But I’ve since realized that bloggers and journalists are each other’s ideal “other,” and so the flare-ups and controversies will probably continue.

These notes are my attempt to clarify some of the key terms and offer a few ideas to help people caught up in the bloggers vs. journalists conflict, which of course goes on. They were presented to “Whose rules?” a conference at Kent State University, billed as a “no-holds-barred discussion of online ethics.” (In other words, a genuine blogger ethics panel!) jay rosen  SEPTEMBER 18, 2008

Seth Godin is one of the biggest internet entrepreneurs today. He runs a very successful blog and has written numerous books (my favorites being The Dip and Tribes).

Seth Godin is a person who gets it. He gets the fact that you have to treat your readers respectfully and personably. You have to give them an experience they will remember. A sort of Buzzmarketing technique.

He says,

“One opportunity that’s underused is the idea of using cookies to treat returning visitors differently than newbies. It’s more work at first, but it can offer two experiences to two different sorts of people.”

Which is why a wordpress plugin created after Seth’s words was created. A wordpress plugin called What Would Seth Godin Do?

Predictions

I just found this post, lost and forgotten, in the bottom of a folder I was backing up.

I meant to publish it in January, 2002, when I started this blog:

Predictions for 2008

I know it's six years away, but I've found that short-term predictions are too easy to make. So, here you go:

* I predict that the number of blogs will explode, to more than a hundred times as many as we have now. If you're an opinion leader, you'll have one.
* A virtually unknown politician, a black man who's father is from Africa, will be elected president, in a landslide. He'll take the office from George W. Bush, leaving with the lowest approval rating of any president in history.
* Fidel Castro will step down.   Predictions for 2008   seth godin  http://www.squidoo.com/seth
